Farali Pattice

Before You Start

Medium

The 1-2 small green chillies provide the heat; use just one for a mild kick or two for a spicier bite.

Make it with no chilli

Simply omit the green chillies from the stuffing mixture; the flavour will remain nutty and aromatic from the coconut and coriander.

Can't Find Something?

  • 2 tbsp cornflour instead of 2 tbsp arrowroot or rice flour. Acts as a similar binding agent to keep the potato dough firm.
  • ½ tsp sea salt or table salt instead of ½ tsp rock salt. Provides the same seasoning effect.

Step by Step Instructions

  1. Step 1: Prepare Potato Dough

    Prepare Potato Dough

Peel and mash the 4 boiled potatoes thoroughly in a large bowl until smooth. Add 2 tbsp sabudana flour and 0.5 tsp rock salt, mixing well to form a soft, non-sticky dough.

Done when: The dough should feel smooth and hold together without sticking to your hands; if it is too wet, add a little extra rice flour.

    15 mins hands-on prep

  2. Step 2: Make The Stuffing

    Make The Stuffing

In a smaller bowl, combine 0.5 cup crushed roasted peanuts, 0.25 cup grated coconut, 1-2 chopped green chillies, 2 tbsp chopped coriander leaves, and 0.25 tsp rock salt. Mix everything together evenly to create a fragrant, crunchy filling.

Done when: The mixture should smell nutty and fresh; ensure the peanuts are crushed into small pieces rather than a powder for the best texture.

    10 mins hands-on prep

  3. Step 3: Shape The Patties

    Shape The Patties

Divide the potato dough into 8 equal portions. Flatten one portion in your palm, place a teaspoon of the peanut stuffing in the center, and fold the edges over to seal it into a smooth patty.

Done when: The patty must be fully sealed so the filling does not leak out during frying; ensure the edges are pinched firmly together.

    15 mins hands-on prep

  4. Step 4: Shallow Fry Patties

    Shallow Fry Patties

Heat 3-4 tbsp oil or ghee in a non-stick pan over medium heat. Place the patties in the pan and fry for about 3-4 minutes on each side until they turn deep golden brown and crispy.

Done when: The patties are done when they are deep golden brown and sound hollow when tapped gently; avoid overcrowding the pan to ensure they crisp up properly.

Why It's Good for You

Potatoes are a versatile vegetable providing carbohydrates, protein, and dietary fibre1. Incorporating potatoes into traditional snacks has been shown to contribute to physiological defense through their antioxidant activity1. When processed, such as through frying, the mineral availability of potato-based products can improve, specifically increasing the accessibility of iron and calcium2. Peanuts and coconut add complementary textures and nutrients to the blend, with research noting that blends of potato, coconut, and peanut have been studied for their ability to provide functional nutritional profiles3. As part of a balanced diet, these ingredients offer a satisfying energy source for your fasting days. Always plan significant dietary changes with your doctor or a registered dietitian to ensure your nutritional needs are met.
